Two suburban Rochester ambulance services are talking merger.
Spencerport Volunteer Ambulance and Gates Volunteer Ambulance Service plan to consolidate operations when they get the necessary state approvals. Officials of both services say this will keep the merged services financially sound, improve service and cut response times.
A public hearing is planned on January 16th at 7:00 p.m. at the Ogden Town Hall.
Spencerport Ambulance President Bruce Jones says it's getting harder to find volunteers, the cost of providing advanced life support keeps getting higher and what insurance companies are willing to pay sometimes doesn't even cover the cost of an ambulance run. Besides saving money, Jones says the merger lets the agencies look at their service boundaries and dispatch the nearest ambulance to the site of a call.
